THE MIDERSPAN

Giant metallic tumbleweeds rolled through the deserted streets. As he slowly crawled through the kitchen, he knew he was badly hurt. He couldn't feel any pain yet so he knew he was in shock, but one of his legs had been chewed off; this had properly ruined his morning and thrown his
whole routine off.


At first the spectacle was awe-inspiring, the light show was extreme and the following days brought with them an overwhelming calm. There was a warmth emanating from every surface, it was a good time to be alive.


He could feel the change taking hold. The tiny hairs that covered him began to fall out. The area where he had been bitten began to itch, but the creature was known for having no venom. It was regarded as a harmless parasite, there were far too many of them but something had recently happened to the whole species some kind of catastrophe. He still had his appointment to keep. He started to prepare himself, but his hard exoskeleton was slowly softening and he had lost another 3 legs. He had been bitten by a radioactive human and as a result he had started to mutate. He had lost his abilities to climb, he felt awkward and his web-fluid had turned to a useless dribble of saliva.


The nuclear accident had left a huge pile of rotting corpses, the air was thick with flies, but he had gone off them recently, favouring beans and cheese on toast, may be with a cup of tea as well-
He had become the Miderspan.
